Franklin Recreation Complex

The Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd., Franklin, TN, offers activities for all ages including classes for adults and kids.  September options include homeschool photography and art classes for middle and high school students, along with Music Lingua Spanish for toddlers and preschoolers.

 

Homeschool Photography 1- Middle & High School

Students will learn basic camera operation and how to improve their photographs in this class. There will be weekly photo assignments and constructive, encouraging  critiques.   Meets Tuesdays, September 4-October 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. Mommy & Me Movement

Bring the kids, ages 0-4 months for a fun and energetic 30-minute movement class. Moms and kids will dance, sing, bond and make memories. Dads, grandparents and caregivers are welcome.  Mommy & Me Movement meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. General admission fees apply. (Class is free to all premium family pass holders.)

 

Mr. Bond’s Science Guys: Saw It on YouTube

Try those crazy YouTube experiments in this science class for ages 5 to 12 yrs.  New experiments each week will keep kids fascinated and engaged. Color Wheels-Homeschool Art Class

Each week, students in this ongoing art class will explore art history, techniques, styles and artists from the past and present. A variety of media will be used to create rich experiences for each child.  Instructor: Shelly Egly. Color Wheels for homeschoolers Wednesdays, September 5-26 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. For ages 5-11.  The fee is $56 for the four–class session. Homeschool Drawing- Middle & High School

This class will help students feel more confident in their drawing skills. Learn different methods for seeing things and translating them to drawings.  Students will work privately in their sketch books in this low-key class.  Meets Thursdays, September 6-October 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. Color Wheels-After School Art

Join the fun as students explore art history, techniques, styles, and famous artists from past to present.  This class is for kids 5 to 11 years, and meets Thursdays, September 6-27 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The fee is $56. Sticky Fingers Preschool Art Club

Enhance and celebrate your preschooler’s creativity by enrolling them in the Sticky Fingers Preschool Art Club at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. Ms. Shelley offers educational art experiences geared to young children (ages 3.5  to 6, potty-trained), with 2 to 3 works of art completed in each class. Music Lingua Spanish-Life on the Farm

Music Lingua is a unique thematic program that uses music, movement, storytelling, art and drama to teach Spanish to children ages 18 mos. to 4 years old. Caregivers attend with children who learn together while they sing and play. Safe Kids 101

Kids think they are ready to stay home alone and parents wonder if it’s okay to let them. This home alone class will her your 9-13 year old take the next step in independence while giving you peace of mind. Topics include: responsibilities when staying home alone, simple first aid and abdominal thrusts for choking victims, how to navigate the online world, fire safety and what to do around an aggressive dog. Also, the truth behind abuse, abduction and stranger danger. Mindful Eating

Learn to control your eating habits in this two-part class.  Learn how important choosing the correct food is for your body and mind, and the difference in physical and emotional hunger. Each class includes teaching time, gentle mindful yoga and a Q&A session. Meets Mondays, September 17 and 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex at 1120 Hillsboro Rd. Painting with Yara Stagner

Are you interested in finding your inner painter? Join the fun in this introductory class to oil and acrylic painting techniques. The class is offered on an ongoing basis on Mondays, starting September 10. Each class is $20 and no pre-registration is needed.  New students can join at any time. Piano

Try Tae Kwon Do, pottery or Tai Chi

 

Teen/Adult Pottery

Join the fun in an ongoing pottery class at the Fairview Recreation Complex every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Instructor June Lusty teaches hand built and thrown techniques. No experience necessary.  There is a $25 supply fee every six classes. Each class is $12. For ages 15 through adults. Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a gentle exercise that is fun and suitable for all ages and capabilities.  Using fluid movements, Tai Chi promotes blood flow, increases flexibility and reduces joint pain.  Tai Chi is offered on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Fairview Recreation Complex, 2714 Fairview Blvd.  Classes are two for $18. January 2018 Classes for all ages

The Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd., has fun classes for kids and adults. In January, try a manners class for kids, or register for guitar lessons.   All classes are open to the public, and registration is available at www.wcparksandrec.com.

 

Polite Kids 101

This basic manners class teaches students ages 7-10 years old to stay on track with kind and respectful living. Topics include introducing yourself, setting a table, being a polite guest and party manners. Includes a light lunch. Polite Kids 101 meets Wednesday, January 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the recreation center in Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd. Wiggles & Giggles

Drop your child off in the gym on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for our free Wiggles and Giggles supervised play time (ages 3-6 years). Parent must stay in the rec center and use the facility. Wiggles & a Giggles is free with a family pass or general admission. The Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville.

 

Guitar Lessons

Learn to play the guitar in 30-minute private lessons on Thursdays at the Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville. Barre

Barre combines ballet, Pilates and yoga to develop beautifully sculpted lean muscles. Barre uses intense isometric training with low-impact moves that focus on balance, lengthening and strengthening. No dance experience is required.  This 60-minute class is offered at the Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd., on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 8:05 a.m.  Please register in advance at www.wcparksandrec.com.

 

Art with Kreative Kat

Kids, ages 6 to 14, come join the fun creating beautiful art! Everyone can be an artist in this class, as the instructor ‘Kat’ helps students realize their potential.  Kat teaches mainly drawing, watercolor, and acrylics. “Autumn in the Oaks” Presented by Oaklands Mansion 

 

Experience the chores of the mid-1800’s through period crafts, demonstrations, games and hands-on activities when you visit Oaklands Mansion’s “Autumn in the Oaks”, slated for September 21, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the historic site, located at 900 North Maney Avenue in Murfreesboro.

This event will focus on chores of the mid-1800’s through hands-on activities for students and adults alike. Plantation activities such as clothes washing, butter churning, quill writing, and rug beating will be explored. Focus will be on learning to appreciate the work and fruits of harvest. Artisans and living history demonstrators will be on the grounds to share their crafts and talents. Other activities scheduled for the event are: scavenger hunt of the exterior of the mansion, kneading dough and limited house tours. Crafts and games for the children such as: sack races, hoops-n-sticks, graces and 1860’s dress up will also be available. 

“It gives us great pleasure to share the house museum and grounds with our community and the surrounding counties.  There are so many new members to our area that have not experienced our rich civil war history,” said Oaklands educational director, Mary Beth Nevills. Teachers and parents can look forward to this event again when they attend the “Days of Washing, Churning and Learning” on May 11, 2018. Reservations are being accepted for both fall and spring educational field days which are open to public and private school groups and home school groups.

“Autumn in the Oaks” is presented by Oaklands Mansion. Admission is $5.00 per student, $5.00 per adult and free for teachers with ten or more students. Check-in and complimentary parking will be at the Roberts Street Pavilion. This event is open to the public with reservations required for groups. Oaklands Mansion is nestled in Oaklands Park, a native tree arboretum and natural wetlands, which includes Maney Spring as well as heritage and native gardens.  Oaklands Visitors Center houses a gift shop and Maney Reception Hall for special events and temporary exhibitions.  Oaklands Mansion is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00AM – 4:00PM and Sundays 1:00PM – 4:00PM. Coed & Women’s Leagues Forming

The Athletics Division of Williamson County Parks and Recreation announces open registration for Fall coed 6’s (Thursday nights, rec or advanced divisions) and women’s 4’s (Sunday afternoons, rec or advanced divisions) indoor volleyball leagues at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road. Registration is now open and will close September 24, or when the divisions are full.  The season starts the week of October 1. Events in Brentwood, TN  – Free the Trees: 100k Tree Day – Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary

9:00am – 12:00pm

Put on your work boots and gloves, sharpen your trimmers and come to Owl’s Hill to help free our beautiful trees from invasive honeysuckle and other exotic plants. We will also be planting 100 trees toward the 100k goal in Tennessee.

This is a great opportunity for older scouts, home school groups and students looking for volunteer projects. Suitable for adults and older children.
