DESCRIPTION:The African American Heritage Society of Williamson County hosts free monthly history lectures at the McLemore House on the first Friday of each month at 10 am. These lectures feature topics related to local African American historical\, cultural and genealogical importance. Past lectures have covered periods from the Civil War through the Civil Rights movement. Previous speakers have been local historians as well as nationally known lecturers like Frederick Douglass’ great-great grandson Kevin Douglass Greene. Porch Talks take place at the McLemore House at 446 11th Avenue North in Franklin’s historic Hard Bargain neighborhood. The McLemore House was built in 1880 by former slave Harvey McLemore and remained in his family until saved by local preservationists and turned into a museum. It is open for guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults\, $5 for children\, children under 5 are free. \nOn Friday\, November 3 at 10 am the Porch Talk will profile AAHS Vice President Harvey Chrisman\, past commander and current historian for American Legion Post 215\, along with AAHS historical committee member and blogger Tina Jones. The pair will explore the rich history of African American veterans from Williamson County dating from the Revolutionary War through the current day. The speakers will also highlight the contributions of the African American Williamson County men who served in World War I. \nAdditionally\, Ms. Jones will be unveiling a new website. Through this website\, the public can easily sponsor memorial pavers at Williamson County’s already established Veterans Park near Five Points in downtown Franklin. This Park allows veterans to be honored with a paver and Ms. Jones is hoping the community will support her plan to sponsor new pavers for the 324 African American men she has identified with Williamson County ties who served in the Civil War. Of those men\, 272 served in the US Army\, 15 served in the US Navy\, and 38 men were taken as slaves to serve as body servants for the Confederate Army. The cost of having a paver installed in Veterans Park is $65. \n \n
