Soul food, music, silent auction part of Hard Bargain Association’s celebration

Hard Bargain Association, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to preservation, affordable housing and revitalization of the historic African-American Hard Bargain neighborhood, is gearing up to host its annual Celebration Dinner on Tuesday, March 29, at the Factory in Jamison Hall.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a silent auction, appetizers and drinks. The program will begin at 7 p.m. with a soul food dinner catered by Catering & Events by Suzette. Presented by Pinnacle Financial Partners, the evening will include sharing the story of Jasmine Lillard, a fourth-generation Hard Bargain resident who is one of the organization’s newest home buyers.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Mike Hicks and The Contribution. Friends of Hard Bargain sponsors include Solomon Builders, Reliant Bank, Stites & Harbison, HCA/TriStar Health, LP Building Products, BancorpSouth, McCann & Hubbard, Merryman-Farr, Rare Assembly, Franklin Rotary Club at Breakfast, Southern Exposure Magazine, and Williamson Herald.

St. Patrick’s Day Party – P.A.L.S. program

The Therapeutic Recreation programs offered by Williamson County Parks and Recreation provide year-round leisure activities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Therapeutic programs are led by Therapeutic Recreation Specialists who assist people with disabilities to develop skills and knowledge for daily living and community involvement. Highlighting the March calendar are a St. Patrick’s Day party and a Throwback Thursday 1950s diner party. All programs are open to the public, and pre-registration is required. The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department will offer a St. Patrick’s Day party as part of the therapeutic recreation program at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road. Enjoy games, a scavenger hunt and dinner on Thursday, March 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This program is for young adults and older, and the cost is $6. This is a P.A.L.S. program (People at Leisure with Support) with caregivers required to stay with those needing support. Caregivers wishing to eat are asked to register and pay the $6 program fee. An Evening With the Stars

Elvis will be back in the building – at least briefly – Feb. 18 for the GraceWorks annual benefit dinner.

GraceWorks invites the public to strut their stuff on the red carpet at An Evening With the Stars at 6 p.m. at the Cool Springs Embassy Suites, 820 Crescent Centre Drive.

The event will include dinner, entertainment and a silent auction. Photo ops will also be available with “Elvis” and other “celebrities.” Dinner-goers can dress as celebrities or movie characters, but that attire is not required.

Tickets are $80 each, and tables of 10 are $800. Tickets are available at www.graceworksministries.net.

Proceeds benefit GraceWorks, a nonprofit serving Williamson County families in need through four areas – family support, hunger prevention, seasonal needs and educational programs. Last year, among other assistance, GraceWorks distributed $1.5 million in food, $411,795 in rent and utility help, 2200 backpacks with school supplies and served 880 families through The Manger, a Christmas gift giving program.

For the ninth year, the Fabulous Friends for Africa will host a Valentine’s Party to raise money for African Leadership, a local organization committed to developing projects and programs that meet the needs of Africans. 

What:  Fabulous Friends for Africa Valentine’s Party

When:  Saturday, February 13, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Where:  Liberty Hall, The Factory in Franklin, 230 Franklin Road

Benefits:  African Leadership (AL) a local organization committed to providing church leaders with theological education and come along side these leaders as they work to impact their local communities across the continent. 

Cost: Host a reserved table for ten for $750 or buy individual tickets for open seating at $75 in advance…$100 at the door.  Register at www.fabulousfriendsforafrica.org  Cost includes Italian buffet dinner, silent auction and dancing to the music of 12 South Band. 

What to know:  Started by a group of women turning 50 who wanted to raise money for the needy in Africa instead of hosting a birthday celebration for themselves.  In its ninth year, the women who call themselves Fabulous Friends for Africa have raised more than $500,000 to support 100 orphans in Lizulu, Malawi and purchase study Bibles for the AL training programs throughout Africa. This year, proceeds raised through the party will benefit women and children across Africa who have been through traumatic experiences, either by war or in the sex slave industry.

Save the Franklin Battlefield to hold annual meeting and dinner

The annual meeting and dinner for the Save the Franklin Battlefield will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, at St Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 510 West Main St. in Franklin.

The gathering for the meeting is at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30. After the dinner, STFB year’s activities will be reviewed, with the speaker following.

The speaker will be historian and writer Brian Allison, speaking on “Action at Franklin during the Retreat from Nashville.” Allison is currently working on a new book, Murder and Mayhem in Nashville, due to be published in 2016.
