Mix & Mingle

Starting in August, GRAY’S On Main customers will have a chance to learn the art behind making some of the historic restaurant’s signature libations for themselves.

The “Mix & Mingle” cocktail series will be led by GRAY’S Beverage Director, Jon Yeager—the creator of the restaurant’s one-of-a-kind, handcrafted cocktail menu. Each class will take place in GRAY’S members-only SOCIETY lounge, which offers the only third-floor view of downtown Franklin’s Main Street that is open to the public, on special occasions.

Sponsored by Red Dog Wine & Spirits, the series will kick off on Tuesday, August 12, at 7 p.m. In honor of the restaurant’s one-year anniversary, the inaugural class will feature two of the past year’s most popular cocktails, the Royal Nectar and the Anthym Spirit.

Not only will attendees enjoy light appetizers and learn how to create each featured cocktail but they will also have the opportunity to engage in conversation while learning about the elements being used and the history of mixology.

The class is open to the public for $35 per person, which includes two cocktails, light appetizers and a surprise takeaway for guests to leave with. Members of GRAY’S exclusive SOCIETY club can attend classes free of charge.

About GRAY’S on Main

Set in a ca. 1876 Victorian building in Historic Downtown Franklin, Tenn., the Gray Drug Co. was a landmark pharmacy here for nearly a century. In 2013, after careful restoration, the three-story GRAY’S on Main was unveiled, honoring Tennessee’s cultural heritage through fresh spirits, flavors and sounds. Eclectic and traditional, GRAY’S’ menu reflects the best of the South in food, with a focus on locally and regionally sourced ingredients. The second floor bar and music hall features handcrafted epicurean cocktails that celebrate the brandy culture of the late 19th century, along with live performances from the best Music City has to offer. Battle of Franklin Trust Launches Immersive

The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience taps into pivotal moments in the conflict to help business executives hone leadership skills; Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management partners on inaugural program for MEDHOST

FRANKLIN, TENN. – The Battle of Franklin Trust announced the launch of an immersive executive leadership development workshop that helps business executives and corporate groups examine their own leadership skills by focusing on decisions made before, during and after one of the most critical conflicts in the Civil War.

The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience, brings participants to actual locations in Franklin that were important to the historic battle and demonstrate how lessons learned long ago are applicable to business challenges executives face today. Some of the leadership issues addressed in the workshop include change management, strategic thinking, communication, innovation, crisis management and inspirational leadership.

“The Battle of Franklin is without question one of the most important conflicts in our nation’s history,” said Eric Jacobson, author, historian and chief executive officer of the Battle of Franklin Trust. “The lessons learned in late November 1864 still echo in the fields and the homes of Franklin. They are lessons of courage, compassion, chivalry and daring, but also of loss, confusion, fear and panic. They are lessons that inform our lives today, and serve as the foundation of The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience workshop.”

The Trust conducted its inaugural workshop last week with MEDHOST, Inc., a provider of market-leading enterprise, departmental and healthcare engagement solutions nationwide. Civil War historians and professors from Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management led the session.

“Most of us learn about key business principles by reading a textbook or sitting in a classroom. It is an entirely different experience to stand on a battlefield and live the leadership lessons of history where they occurred,” said Tom Mitchell, VP of Marketing for MEDHOST. “Our operations team was captivated not only by the incredible sights they saw and stories they heard, but also by the many parallels between the critical decisions that were made at the Battle of Franklin and those that we make in our business each day.”

The Battle of Franklin was one of the last decisive conflicts of the Civil War.   On November 30, 1864 five of the bloodiest hours in the Civil War took place in Williamson County, TN.  The number of Americans killed at Franklin is similar in number to those killed at Omaha Beach during WWII’s Normandy invasion.

“Our city’s story is well known by Civil War historians,” said Dr. Ken Moore, Mayor of Franklin.  “The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience extends that story beyond the history books and makes it relevant to today. This workshop is a wonderful, hands-on opportunity for business leaders to translate yesterday’s history into business success today.”

The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience can be conducted in one or two day sessions. It involves two distinct segments:

Battlefield experience – Participants are transported back to November 30, 1864 by travelling to the exact locations where some of the battle’s critical leadership decisions were made, including Winstead Hill, The Carter House and Carnton Plantation.  Accompanying the group are Civil War historians who describe in detail the Union, Confederate and civilian leaders who made critical decisions and how those decisions, in some cases, changed the course of history. Through the workshop, participants see how the challenges faced 150 years ago are in fact very similar to the leadership/management issues of today.

  • Classroom deeper dive – Participants have the opportunity to examine their own leadership skills through a discussion led by experts in any number of traditional management education topics, including strategy, managing change, innovation, communication and inspirational leadership .

“We believe that workshops like these can serve as a powerful management education tool that provides today’s business leaders with leadership development experience that results in positive change,” said Dean Eric Johnson of Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

Williamson County Chamber of Commerce President Matt Largen added, “Companies in Middle Tennessee have a wonderful employee development asset right in their own backyard. This workshop demonstrates how the history of our community is one of many resources available to growing businesses here in Williamson County.”

Festival Rebrands, Moves To Warmer Weather To Offer New Craft Beer Experience

For more than a decade, the Downtown Franklin Association (DFA) has provided beer lovers a taste of some of the best local, national and international brands during its annual Main Street Brewfest. This year, the event is moving its festivities to Saturday, May 7, so that attendees can enjoy warmer weather and a whole afternoon dedicated to 50-plus craft beers.

Presented by Lipman Brothers, the event will also debut new VIP options, in addition to extended tasting times and live music. Capitalizing on the natural backdrop of Historic Downtown Franklin, dozens of tasting sites will line Main Street from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and event organizers promise a focused emphasis on the latest craft brew product and a spotlight on Williamson County’s microbrewery market.

“From rebranding our look to changing the date and time, we couldn’t be more excited for what Brewfest is going to bring to ‘America’s Favorite Main Street’ this year,” said Kristy Williams, director of the Downtown Franklin Association, a subsidiary of the Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County. “We are constantly looking for ways to enhance the experience for our friends, and believe the changes we’ve made to this year’s event will add another dimension to the Brewfest everyone has look forward to each Spring.”

In addition to the array of local, national and international craft beers that will be available for tasting in the city’s historic core, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to purchase a VIP ticket that will provide an elevated experience unlike any Brewfest has offered in the past. Those ticket buyers will have access to an exclusive area offering food, wine, a specialty cocktail and additional craft beer that won’t be offered to general admission, plus a VIP lounge at JJ’s Wine Bar and a 30-minute head start at tasting sites.

Leading the event this year is Tyler Crowell of Corsair Distillery and Claire Marshall. Crowell of A. Marshall Family Foods Inc., who will serve as the 2016 Brewfest chairs and collaborate with Lipman Brothers in hand-picking this year’s beer selections. As Franklin residents and community activists, the Crowells’ combined industry experience and insight into the world of craft beer is expected to add another layer of sophistication to the event. The pair, assisted by co-chair Julie Walton Garland of Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry, will lead a committee of dedicated volunteers who produce the event each year.

“We’ve really thought through how to make this Brewfest a first-rate festival that outshines the rest, and I think the difference will be noticeable,” Crowell said. “It’s all about showcasing the best of the best in craft beer this year and we’re excited to be working closely with Lipman Brothers to select a diverse sampling from craft breweries, both local and abroad. I expect this to be our best year yet.”

Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic at 5 a.m. and the public is welcome, but only ticket-holders will be able to participate in the beer tasting. In addition to the camaraderie and beer found on “America’s Favorite Main Street,” participants can also expect live music and food vendors along the avenues, to add to the festival-like atmosphere.

“There’s something unique about downtown Franklin, and Brewfest is just another one of those things that makes this place special,” Garland said. “Each year, the event provides a fun way to encourage participants to explore our retail district, shop at local stores and eat at downtown restaurants, and we want to ensure it’s a high-quality festival that people can enjoy in a safe and family-friendly atmosphere. ”

General admission tickets are $55 and VIP tickets are $85, and both can be purchased online at downtownfranklintn.com/brew-fest. To encourage a better flow of traffic, ticket-holders will check in at City Hall to get a site map, a description of the beers and a complimentary tasting glass.

Attendees are also encouraged to arrange safe rides to and from Brewfest, and will be provided with multiple options for doing so. The Franklin Transit Authority is offering round-trip transportation to and from locations inside Franklin city limits for a $6 fee. To reserve a ride, call (615) 628-0263 or email twilighttodd@tmagroup.org. In addition, we’ve partnered with Lyft ridesharing service who will be offering a 10% discount to existing users who use the code TAPHISTORY10.

Those looking to extend their stay can find hotels available by visiting www.visitfranklin.com–but in order to take advantage of the trolley, the hotel must be within the Franklin city limits. The Drury Plaza Hotel in Cool Springs will also be offering special room rates and shuttle service for festival-goers who call and request reservations using group #2270197.

Franklin’s Main Street Brew Fest is produced by the Downtown Franklin Association, a nationally accredited Main Street Program and a division of the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County. Proceeds from the event go to the continued revitalization and promotion of the historic district, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and designated by the National Trust as a Great American Main Street and a Preserve America community. O’More College of Design awards 12 summer studio scholarships Day Camp Sessions Immerse Kids of All Ages in Art and Design

O’More College of Design has awarded 12 scholarships to elementary, middle and high-school students who applied for an opportunity to attend its Summer Studio program, a day camp offering a diverse schedule during three sessions in June and July.

Among the winners were Alyssa Larocca, a rising senior at Independence High School in Thompson’s Station and Jennifer Marshall, a rising senior at Obion County Central High School in Troy, Tenn., who were chosen by a panel of judges to receive two full scholarships to the College’s annual art camp.

“The O’More Summer Studio program engages students in a way that extends beyond the average summer art program,” said Program Director Sorrel Dugan. “For the older set, that’s because of real-world application from industry professionals. For the younger crowd, the camp introduces them to a heightened appreciation of the arts.”

Each student winner submitted two copies of original artwork with a recommendation from his or her art instructor. Entries were evaluated on the applicants’ questionnaire responses, teachers’ comments and the quality of submitted work. The College gifted more than $2,300 in scholarship money for the camps.

Larocca, who hopes to attend O’More after graduation, said she’s looking forward to interacting with other Summer Studio participants and instructors.

“The opportunity to attend this program means so much to me,” Larocca said. “I love design and the freedom that comes with it. I’m excited to receive direction from the teachers and other students, and to share what I know as well.”

Sessions for grades 6 through 12 will be held June 18-22 and July 23-27, while the remaining session for grades 1 through 5 will be July 9-13. Registration is ongoing.

Sessions are geared to help inspire creativity and an appreciation of the arts, incorporating an eclectic set of classes that enables each student to craft a summer schedule tailored to their personal needs and interests. Courses range from fashion design and animation to architectural drawing and painting, and several new classes were added to the 2012 slate, including fashion courses for grades 1 through 12.

A culminating Summer Studio Gallery event in the Abbey Leix Mansion on the College campus will allow students to experience the privilege of having work shown to others.

For more information on Summer Studio, the scholarships and the other winners, visit www.omorecollege.edu/summerstudio.

Founded in 1970, O’More College of Design is a four-year, post-secondary institution offering bachelor of fine arts degrees in interior design, fashion design and visual communications. The College is located in the historic district of Franklin, Tenn.
