The Elephant Man

This Tony Award-winning drama is based on the true life of Joseph (“John”) Merrick, a medical mystery of Victorian England who toured Europe as a freak show attraction. His shocking disfigurement afforded him little social contact, apart from the gawking of onlookers indulging their own morbid curiosity. When an esteemed doctor takes Merrick into his care, he begins to see past the Elephant Man’s unsightliness, discovering a remarkable intellect, heart and hunger for human connection. The role of Merrick calls for his malformation to be conveyed through the actor’s physicality, without the aid of makeup or prosthetics—a poignant allusion to what lies below the surface.

Brentwood Firefighters Help Accept Donation from Tennessee Titans for Gatlinburg

From the City of Brentwood…

“At Sunday’s Tennessee Titans game against the Denver Broncos, nine members of the Brentwood Fire and Rescue Department stood on the field to accept a $144,270 check from the Tennessee Titans to Dolly Parton’s “My People Fund.” The substantial donation will help those families impacted by the recent fires in Gatlinburg.  All nine of the firefighters on the field were part of the deployment to Gatlinburg or East Tennessee.   The team also were present during the singing of the national anthem at Sunday’s game.

achary Scheitel spent nearly a week in Gatlinburg and said, “We have inherently dangerous jobs but this deployment changed the dynamic. We were no longer dealing with a dangerous call in Brentwood, we were existing in an environment that was actively on fire. We had traded our normal medical calls, clean fire engines, and city streets for a burning forest fire where everything was very unforgiving. No hot coffee or friendly Brentwood faces, just a whole burning mountain that required your attention at every moment to keep your crew and yourself safe. It was hard, hot, dirty, and dangerous, but a good experience. We were able to help our fellow Tennesseans and make a real difference,” Scheitel said.

Ficosa opens a new state-of-the-art plant

Ficosa, a top-tier global provider devoted to the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of high-technology vision, safety, connectivity and efficiency systems for the automotive and mobility sectors, has boosted its presence in the United States by opening a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Cookeville, Tennessee. With an investment of over 50 million dollars, the new plant is equipped with the sector’s latest technology, becoming the most advanced in Ficosa’s global portfolio.

The Cookeville facility, which has a total surface area of 270,000 square feet, is dedicated to producing rear view systems for automotive manufacturers such as Nissan, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors. As a leader in painting and injection processes, the plant has an average production capacity of 4.5 million rear view mirrors and will add nearly 500 new and advanced manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and Tennessee. This cutting-edge production center, whose construction started in June 2015, celebrated its grand opening last Friday, October 28, with the presence of Rep. Diane Black, Cookeville City Mayor Ricky Shelton, Putnam County Executive Randy Porter, and other main authorities of the area and key automotive manufacturers.

“Today marks a great day for Ficosa and Tennessee,” said Javier Pujol, CEO of Ficosa, during the event. “This new facility is a strategic move that allows the consolidation of key operations and enables a further future growth in one of the largest automobile markets in the world, where Ficosa has been present since 1994. By opening these new premises we are not only improving the group’s efficiency and operational capacity in the region, but also reinforcing our commitment to bring more advanced manufacturing jobs to the U.S. and to help lay the foundation for a more successful manufacturing future in the state of Tennessee.”

The new plant is bringing hundreds of new jobs to Cookeville, with new job positions opening up daily, from production and project managers, technicians and engineers, to human resource specialists and assembly and warehouse workers. Those who are interested in applying for a job should send their resumes to jobscookeville@ficosa.com.

In addition, Javier Pujol explained that the Cookeville’s facility also strengthens the company’s business alliance with Panasonic – which started in 2015 – in North America (United States and Mexico). “We are boosting a plan to align the industrial strategy of Ficosa with Panasonic in the region of North America, in order to accelerate the launch of new products in the areas of connectivity, efficiency and safety. This plan allows us to support the growth of the local market and increase our capacity in R&D in mirrors, shifters and new technologies that we are developing together with Panasonic, bringing together our technological capabilities with the know-how in electronics of the Japanese company.”

In June 2016, Ficosa North America was awarded four contracts from two American OEMs to produce 8,900,000 units of rear-view mirrors over a period of five years. Three of the four orders will be produced at the new Cookeville’s plant, with an estimated economic value of 460 million dollars. Production on those contracts is scheduled to start first quarter of 2018.

Trick or Treating in Downtown Franklin

Residents in downtown Franklin’s Hincheyville neighborhood are expecting another big turnout this Halloween. Franklin Police will close West Main Street and Fair Street to vehicle traffic between 7th and 11th Avenues from 5pm-9pm for trick-or-treaters Monday, October 31.

The Franklin Police and Fire Departments will have a command post at West Main St. & 7th Ave, and will be handing out candy and glow necklaces to children to make them safer by increasing their visibility.

Trick-or-treat days and times in Franklin
are set by individual neighborhoods and homeowner associations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children are four times more likely to be in a fatal pedestrian accident on Halloween than any other night of the year. There are several reasons why children are more likely to be hurt in pedestrian accidents, including:

◾They often choose to take the shortest route, which may mean darting out between parked cars rather than take the safer route of crossing at corners.
◾They are not good at evaluating potential traffic threats.
◾They are more likely to ignore their peripheral vision, and are generally less attentive of their surroundings.
◾They have a tendency to take more risks.
◾They cannot cross the street as rapidly as adults.
◾They may be distracted by other children’s costumes and actions, and home decorations.

Police encourage parents to trick-or-treat with their kids, and be sure to tell them that some people driving cars may not slow down for them.

Motorists are urged to slow down and use extra caution Monday night, as Franklin streets will be filled with excited children.

Information on registered sex offenders living in proximity to specific geographic locations can be found at
this interactive map by the TBI.

Registered sex offenders being supervised by the Tennessee Department of Corrections must remain in their homes between 6pm and 6am, may not have their porch lights on, are forbidden to decorate their home, dress in costume, open their door for trick-or-treaters, or attend fall festivals or parties.
