High School Musical this January

The Act Too Players (ATP), Williamson County’s premier training program for all youths
interested in the performing arts will take the stage in January with the mounting of Disney’s High School Musical. The productions will run from January 23rd through January 25
located in Downtown Franklin, Tennessee.
Disney Channel’s smash hit movie musical comes to life on your stage! Troy, Gabriella, and the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends, and family while balancing their classes and extra curricular activities.
It’s the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the New Year. Basketball team captain and resident jock Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus.
Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.  Disney’s High School Musical is fun for the whole family with songs like We’re All in This Together, Start of Something New, and Get Your Head in the Game.
This production of High School Musical is being performed by youth members of the Act Too Players School of Music and Theatre. The Act Too Player’s youth programming is designed to give each student the opportunity for a well-rounded performing arts education.
Act Too Players will also be producing Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, Zombie Prom, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids, and the non-musical Wizard of Oz this January. This series of productions will be performed January 16th through January 25th with various show times which can be found on the Franklin Theatre website.  Ticket prices range from $13 dollar tickets to $25 tickets for the cabaret seating at the front of the audience.

tennis camps on Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30. Ages 8 to 14 (beginner/
adv. beginner) will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, and ages 9 to 17 (intermediate/
advanced) from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The camps are $96 per junior.

Christmas Carols

square in Franklin. We invite you to join us!

Stop Hop & Shop Trolley

For the first time ever, downtown Franklin guests will enjoy the Stop Hop & Shop Trolley during select Saturdays in November and December!

In partnership with the DFA and the Franklin Transit Authority, the Factory at Franklin is providing free trolley rides during this holiday season to encourage friends and family to experience the joy of “shopping small!” By offering this festive form of transportation, we hope that you’ll create a special tradition with loved ones: stop at the Factory to view their fantastic Christmas tree exhibition, then hop on the red & green trolley with festive surprises, and continue to shop in the sparkling & light-filled Historic Downtown Franklin, Tennessee!

Plus–the Stop Hop & Shop Trolley will kick off on Small Business Saturday this year, making it perfect for you to support small and shop indie!

The schedule is as follows: Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Dec. 20 and Dec. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The trolley will start off at the Factory at Franklin and then take its passengers down Main Street to Second Avenue, then on to Third and Fourth Avenue, and up to West Main past Fifth Avenue. It will then circle back around on Church Street and up Columbia Avenue, then on to the Factory… making sure you are able to shop at all your favorite stores!

There is no need to reserve space or tickets for the trolley. Simply park at the Factory, and look for the trolley pick-up signs.

Tree Lighting Ceremony

The city of Franklin is teaming with Spring Tree Media to light up the square this December 4th at 7:15 to make the 2014 Christmas tree lighting a new spectacular!  Also new this year are the Freedom Intermediate School Honors Choir, the Centennial High School Chamber Choir, students from Act Too Players and of course Santa Claus.

The downtown Franklin Square will be closed for the first time in more than 10 years for this event so attendees can view the movies and lights projected on the buildings and walk to the tree without worry of traffic.  The square will be closed from 7-9pm.

“This is promising to be a great event and we are honored Spring Tree media is donating their creative ideas, and services for Franklin families to celebrate our hometown Christmas tree lighting,” said City Administrator Eric Stuckey.  “It’s always a pleasure to work with our local school choirs for this event as well and we welcome Freedom Intermediate and Centennial High School this year!”

“This is really going to be fun, we have a great vision for this event and everything is falling into place, we simply need the weather to cooperate so folks can enjoy a nice winters night on the beautiful Franklin square and welcome in the holiday season,” said Peter Vaque, President of Spring Tree Media.

Santa will be on hand for photos by the tree and light refreshments will be served.

Wellness and Weight Loss

Williamson County Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce a new program for weight loss and overall wellness! Wellness and Weight Loss Group Coaching will help you learn tips and techniques to help you meet your wellness and weight loss goals. Through education and information sharing, you’ll stay accountable in a safe, fun and supportive group environment!

A coach will help you create your own plan for your “new” self care. Overcome fears, mental roadblocks and excuses. Get “unstuck” and be on your way to an even better you! Learn how nutrition, food shopping, meal planning, exercising and a dose of life balance tie into your wellness and weight loss goals!

This new program will meet Mondays, December 1- January 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd. A small group of participants (up to 8) will meet 6 times as a group and each participant will meet one on one with certified instructor, Nancy Stevens. The cost of the program is $150 per person. Remembering the Battle of Franklin

November 29, 2014 – 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm – Living History Presentation of Carnton as Hospital
Walk through the hallowed halls of Carnton Plantation and experience the house as it would have been the night of November 30, 1864. Nearly 100 re-enactors will portray Confederate soldiers and the surgeons who treated them at the largest Confederate field hospital during and after the Battle of Franklin. Admission is $5 for all ages.

November 30, 2014 – 5:00 am to 7:00 am & 9:00 am to 11:00 am– Anniversary Battlefield Tour led by Eric A. Jacobson
Walk the battlefield with historian and author Eric A. Jacobson on the morning of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin. This special walking battlefield tour will step off from The Carter House and visit several critical points of interest including the Carter garden, the cotton gin property, and along the main Federal line. November 30, 2014 – The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin and Annual Illumination
To commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Franklin, 10,000 luminaries, representing the casualties of the battle, will be lit at dusk. Luminaries will be present along Columbia Pike, at Carter House, at Lotz House, and at several points on the battlefield in that area. Luminaries will also be present at Carnton adjacent to the Confederate Cemetery. Luminaries will be lit at dusk until approximately 9 pm.

Church bells will toll for five minutes downtown beginning at 4 pm. A ceremony at Carter House will begin around 4:05 pm with remarks by Mayor Ken Moore and Eric Jacobson, Battle of Franklin Trust CEO.

A ceremony at Carnton will begin at 4:45 pm. Carroll Van West, State Historian, and Julian Bibb, Heritage Foundation President and Franklin’s Charge member, will speak briefly. Eric Jacobson will close with final remarks.

Carter House and Carnton will open to the public free of charge from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Santa’s Mailbox

Williamson County Parks and Recreation invites kids to drop off a letter to Santa in one of its special Santa mailboxes from December 1-19. Santa’s mailboxes are located at: the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd.; the Fairview Recreation Complex, 2714 Fairview Blvd.; the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Drive; and the Hillsboro-Leiper’s Fork Community Center at 5325 Old Highway 96 West in Leiper’s Fork.

Every letter will go straight to Santa and each child will receive a personal response. Be sure to include your home address. Santa promises to send a letter back to every good girl and boy!

Battle Scarred

Over 100 artifacts are on display, some of which have not been viewed together for 150 years. Incorporating artifacts, graphic elements, light and sound, the display will be the first of its kind in Franklin. Battle Scarred captures the ultimate cost of war and the importance of the Battle of Franklin as part of our national heritage.

STEP INTO THE STORY
Upon entering the exhibit, you will receive an enlistment card of a soldier who fought in the Battle of Franklin. The fate of your soldier will be revealed during the tour.

HARVEY’S TRAVELS: Children & Family Guide
A free activity book is available for children and families to enjoy with the exhibit. Follow Harvey the dog through the display, stopping at his paw prints to learn more and complete an activity related to the exhibit.

FAMILY NIGHT
An educational Family Night will take place on the third Thursday of every month during the exhibit, each with a new theme. These after-hour evenings will allow families and visitors additional time to explore and enjoy the exhibit.
