Brightstone Bracketology

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

Since this proclamation describes the mission of BrightStone, during the month of March, BrightStone is initiating a fun, awareness campaign entitled “BrightStone Bracketology”.  A total of 16 donors, volunteers and staff members have joined in a “competition” to recruit new Facebook likes and Twitter followers to help build awareness for BrightStone’s mission, vision and work in the community of developmental disabilities.

The sixteen participants are encouraged to go viral and communicate with their personal friends and followers to not only cast their vote for them by liking or following with their assigned hashtag, but also to encourage their friends and followers to help spread the message.  “Viral communication will be key to this campaign,” stated Tina Majors, Director of Fund Development at BrightStone.  “Building awareness for BrightStone will allow us to share updates, opportunities, accomplishments and milestones with social media friends. We know that our community likes to vote online, and this is a slightly different twist!”

Other ways that you can make a difference and participate in Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month include:

(1)   Volunteer!  An hour, a half/day to help a BrightStone student, for a project, for an event—we have something for everyone!  You can use your abilities to help BrightStone! Call 615-790-4888 or email info@brightstone.org to learn more.

(2)   Organize a themed “Shower of Blessings” from your church, organization, club or workplace to provide needed supplies and materials for operations.  Ideas include:  Paper Goods, Pantry Items, Office Supplies, Arts and Crafts, Production Needs, etc.  Lists of specific needs can be provided upon request.

(3)   Schedule a personalized tour for yourself, a friend, business associates, organization or club members, church members, co-workers, etc.  Tours are generally given Mondays-Thursdays, at either 9:30 or 11:00 a.m.

(4)   Plan to participate in BrightStone’s BOWLABILITY benefit on August 10th or 11th by organizing a team and raising much needed funds for our adults.  Go ahead and make that commitment by registering at http://www.firstgiving.com/brightstone/bowlability2015. Participating is SO MUCH FUN!

(5)   Financially support BrightStone’s endeavors by contributing to our scholarship fund, “Enhance the Chance”.  Help make it possible for an adult to attend who otherwise might not be able.  Visit  http://brightstone.org/donate/enhance-the-chance-scholarship-campaign/.

Franklin TN

Franklin is a highly rated place to retire located in the center of Tennessee. The town is surprisingly affluent, one of the richest towns in the state. The New York TImes called it a “…southern gem hiding in the shadow of Nashville”. There is a 16 block historic district, cute stores and independent businesses, brick sidewalks, and nicely landscaped sidewalks. The extensively renovated 300 seat Franklin Theatre, an Art Deco marvel, is the pride of the town. The population has grown 58% since 2000 and now stands at over 66,000. It is home not only to local agricultural enterprises, but many corporations as well.

Prior to the Civil War Franklin was one of the more affluent places in the country. The battle of Franklin during the Civil War resulted in more than 10,000 casualties. After the war the area was devastated, but has come back strong in recent times. Franklin features a historic downtown with great antique shopping and dining. Corporate headquarters here include Nissan North America, Healthways, Inc. and Mars Petcare US. It is a short commute to Nashville. Photo of Main Street courtesy of Wikipedia and Ichabod.

Marsala!

From the CoolSprings Galleria…

By Rebecca Paiement

PlaceWise Media Network

With much fashion fanfare, Pantone, the color gurus, announced their 2015 color of the year. And it’s Marsala. Described by Pantone as “naturally robust and earthy,” this rich red hue, named for Marsala wine, will be seen throughout home and environmental design but especially, this coming season, in the worlds of beauty and fashion.

Look for eye shadow in this deep hue, as seen on the spring runways of Vera Wang and Derek Lam where eyes were rimmed in wine. Lips are no surprise, showing up staining the puckers of models at Dolce & Gabbana and Number 21. As for nails, the introduction of Marsala will kick up the usual reds, wines and burgundies to a new level.

Looking lovely in both stud and hanging earrings, Marsala presents just the right amount of deep red color by the face. The color is also striking in pendant form around the neck.

In terms of clothing and accessories, bigger chain stores, upon hearing the Marsala announcement, have already introduced button down shirts, corduroy pants and sweaters in the shade. Look, too, for scarves, suede Marsala-colored handbags, tall boots, gloves and leggings.

Indulge all your senses with an almost aromatic wardrobe hue this season.

The Franklin Police Department, in partnership with the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office, is proud to participate in the 2015 SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) campaign.

The goal of SAFE is to increase seatbelt and child restraint use, to protect and save more lives on Tennessee roadways. No matter how short or long your drive may be, it is imperative that drivers and passengers buckle up – every time.

“We will continue to actively enforce seatbelt and child passenger restraint laws,” said Sergeant David Prather of the Franklin Police Department’s Traffic Unit. “If, through our efforts, we can change the behavior of even one person – we might just save a life.”

The SAFE campaign is active, and runs through July 31, 2015.

Patricia Hart Luncheon

United Way of Williamson County’s Patricia Hart Society is a group of dedicated women in Williamson County who support the needs of our community and have joined together to encourage women of all ages and backgrounds to help in the work of United Way.  Our vision is to create an opportunity for women to take a leadership role in positively impacting the community. Williamson County resident Patricia Hart, active community volunteer, community philanthropist and advocate, agreed to lend her name to this endeavor because of her strong belief in United Way and as she puts it, “because extraordinary things happen when women come together.”  To learn more about or join the Patricia Hart Society, email Debby Rainey or call 615-771-2312.

Click here to read, or view the videos below of three touching stories of women who received support from United Way agencies. These were the finalists for the Woman of Inspiration Award from the Patricia Hart Society HeART to Heart luncheon 2014. Every video story is unique, but all of them illustrate the power of the Patricia Hart Society to help people transform their lives.
